Our structure and activities

The policlinic of ITM is organised in several sections.

Travel Clinic

Our Travel Clinic focuses on pre-travel and post-travel:

  • Prepare for your trip as best as you can. During a travel health consultation, a medical expert will offer advice and give you the necessary vaccinations. Explore our pre-travel services

  • Did you return ill from your journey? Our specialists in tropical medicine will follow up your medical problems. Explore our post-travel services

We are an outpatient clinic and do not admit patients for stay. Should hospitalisation be necessary, we will refer you to the Antwerp University Hospital and monitor your case.

HIV/STI Clinic

We are a national HIV Reference Centre, offering medical and psychosocial guidance to people living with HIV. Our doctors are specialised in STIs and HIV. Besides doctors, at the HIV Reference Centre Antwerp you’ll also find:

  • Social nurses

  • Therapy counsellors

  • Psychologists

  • Sexologist

  • Study nurses

They will answer all your questions and give reliable, personal advice. Feel free to discuss anything and everything with them. You’ll be treated by the same doctor, if possible. Our staff members are strongly committed to professional confidentiality and have the greatest respect for your privacy.

Helpcenter

Helpcenter is a separate activity within ITM. Helpcenter offers low-threshold consultations for sexual health issues to vulnerable population groups and people with an increased risk of becoming infected with HIV and STIs. These include:

  • Africans and other immigrants from countries with high HIV prevalence

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)

  • Drug users who use needles

  • Newcomers without access to regular health care

  • Customers of sex workers

  • Individuals who were at high risk of contracting an STI (occasional partners, multiple partners, partners belonging to one of these risk groups)

  • Individuals who absolutely need to remain anonymous and were at risk of infection

As we cannot help everyone in Helpcenter, patients from the above target groups have priority. If you do not belong to one of these groups, please see a GP. We realise that there may be several reasons for not wanting to involve your own physician or general practitioner. Helpcenter can act as an alternative to you, although we do want to stress that we don’t replace your physician. Everything is done confidentially.

Clinical Trial Site (CTS)

The Clinical Trial Site (CTS) evaluates new vaccines and medicines. It carries out tests on healthy volunteers, but also on people with specific conditions, such as sexually transmitted diseases or infectious diseases. The CTS organises clinical trials in cooperation with academic partners and partners from the life science sector. In all trials, the safety of the trial participants is always an absolute priority.

Clinical Reference Laboratory

Our Clinical Reference Laboratory performs laboratory tests on samples of patients of our policlinic and samples sent for diagnosis or confirmation by other Belgian laboratories and hospitals. The laboratory hosts several (inter)national reference laboratories/centres in the fields of tropical diseases and HIV/STI.

Our team consists of laboratory technicians, scientists, administrative staff and clinical microbiologists. They are committed to delivering accurate and precise results, according to the highest quality standards and within a reasonable time. They provide advice to the clinicians on which test to request, which samples to take and how to interpret results.
