International Cooperation
Connecting the Dots - that is ITM's motto for its interventions on international cooperation. In our cooperation projects, we focus on individual and institutional capacity strengthening. We do this from a holistic perspective, including research skills, education, institutional management and networking. We believe capacity grows by doing things together. We conduct joint research, develop joint course curricula and offer mobility grants to staff, to name but a few initiatives.
Our partners worldwide
ITM works with 24 partners across three continents. These partnerships are funded by a five-year grant from the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD). The Flemish Government additionally funds two more partnerships in Mozambique.
Our Alliance for Education in Tropical Medicine and International Public Health includes an additional five partnerships.

Alliance for Education in Tropical Medicine and International Public Health
As a component of the institutional agreement between ITM and the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD), the Alliance serves as a framework to develop educational partnerships, collaboration and exchange with international higher-educational institutions in the agreement’s partner countries and beyond.
The main aim is to foster quality, innovation, internationalisation and peer learning in the field of postgraduate education. Mutual learning is at the heart of the Alliance.
Joint Strategic Frameworks
The Joint Strategic Frameworks (JSF) were established in 2016 within the framework agreement with the Belgian government on the future of Belgian Development Cooperation. In a JSF, the non-governmental actors set strategic goals to work on jointly or in complementary ways, based on a common context and risk analysis of a country or theme. JSF participants are all recognised non-governmental actors: civil society organisations and institutional actors.
